The Monticello Ponies hosted the Black Hawk Warriors on February 20th. A close first half ended in a 35-29 Monticello lead, and Black Hawk seemed to lose all their fight in the second half as they allowed the Ponies to score 55 points and come away with the 90-52 victory.

Black Hawk held a 9-point lead early on in the first half but the Ponies battled back to tie the score at 21 with 6 minutes left in the first. A 3-pointer by Devin Holtz and two baskets by Reece Rufer put the Ponies ahead, and the rest of the half was spent trading baskets, with Monticello coming out on top.

Reece Rufer had 27 points and 9 rebounds for the Ponies, in the win over Black Hawk on February 18, 2020.

"It was a busy night, as we had Senior Night, Parent's Night, and the 1st grade halftime circus," stated Coach Mark Olson. "Black Hawk started the game out playing well, and we didn't match their energy level. We found ourselves down 19-10 with 9:24 to go in the first half, but were able to improve our defense over the last 9 minutes and took a 35-29 lead into halftime. We then were able to pull away a little in the second half to win. Overall, it was a great night to celebrate our players, families, seniors, and our conference championship."

Monticello came out in the second half and went on a 21-5 run and the closest Black Hawk could come after that was 16 points. Monticello made 20 free throws, while Black Hawk were only 3-4 at the line.

Reece Rufer poured in 27 points and had 9 rebounds for the Ponies, while Peter Gustafson scored 13 points, Simon Blohowiak put 11 points on the board and had 6 rebounds, Rudy Wicker scored 9 points and pulled down 5 rebounds and Devin Holtz scored 8 points.

The Ponies played their final regular season game at Pecatonica on February 27th. Six Rivers East conference champs, Monticello is seeded #1 in Division 5 for the WIAA Regionals and with a first round bye, will host the winner of the #9 Pecatonica vs #8 Black Hawk game on Friday, March 6th. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
