Vehicle Parade to Show Support For Special Needs Families

April 2, 2020

All families from the Monticello/New Glarus areas that have family members who have special needs which require car rides for therapeutic purposes to help ease the stress for the isolation are invited to take part in a very special event. There will be a guided vehicle parade around Monticello on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Please remember to respect the Safer at Home guidelines and maintain social distancing.

This guided tour will provide these families a destination for their ride on Sunday and an opportunity for the community to step out and provide those families with support. The tour will be escorted by Monticello Police, Monticello Fire, and New Glarus Fire. Families with special needs members who would like to participate should be at the Monticello Fire Station at 1:00 p.m., and remain be in their own vehicles for own their protection.

Community members - please make signs or come out and show your support for these families as they pass by your houses! Being isolated can be especially hard on these families and your support would be much appreciated.

The parade will include Charlotte Deleste, the Channel 3 anchor who promotes the “Do Something Good” and “Top Notch Teacher” segments, and her son, Gio, who uses car rides as therapy.

For years their family has logged miles that had no specific destination but just peaceful countryside to help him relax. When the Coronavirus outbreak started and schools were cancelled the in-school therapy stopped, putting a higher demand on Charlotte and her family. One way to meet that demand was to provide rides for Gio through a “Hi Gio” sign campaign which also gave them a destination. When Gio sees these signs he lights up with excitement. People have put signs in their yards, in their windows, on their house, on tractors, on vehicles, and anywhere that you can imagine. This is Monticello’s chance to support families like Charlotte’s. This simple act provides these families a much needed destination that will give everyone an opportunity to show how much we support each other and gives them a chance to experience this wonderful community.

Thank you for all of your warm hearts!
