On Saturday, May 9, 2020, the New Glarus Fire Department was called to residential fire on Spring Valley Road, north of the Village of New Glarus. Heavy smoke and flames were reported. Fire departments from Belleville, Monticello, Albany, Argyle, Blanchardville, Monroe, Verona, Mount Horeb, and Fitchburg assisted, as well as the New Glarus Area EMS, New Glarus Police Department and Green County Sheriff's Department. There was no one in the house at the time of the fire, however the family of Mark and Keeley Welsh was devastated by the loss of their home and belongings. A Facebook posting went out on pages by the New Glarus Area EMS, New Glarus Fire Department and the New Glarus Needs Network pages. Donations poured in and organizers had to ask people to give the family some time to go through everything donated. According to the New Glarus Needs Network Facebook page the family is searching for a duplex or home to rent. A GoFundMe page was also started, raising nearly $20,000 by Tuesday morning.
