Monticello National Honor Society News

May 14, 2020

This year the Monticello National Honor Society actively participated in a variety of volunteer projects. Throughout the school year, we packed boxes at Green Cares Food Pantry for local families in need. With the Monticello Police Department, we delivered Meals on Wheels to local families for Thanksgiving. In December we became elves at Santa’s Workshop at Zwingli Church and assisted kids in finding Christmas gifts and wrapped them for their loved ones. With the money raised from this event, we were able to make donations to the Monticello Empty Stocking Fund and Green Cares Food Pantry. For Samaritan Purse’s Operation Christmas Child, we worked with a partner and purchased small gifts to create Christmas boxes for impoverished children around the world. We hosted our annual Red Cross blood drive where we recruited donors and collected over 76 pints of blood, thus impacting over 228 lives. Lastly, in small groups, we made several tie blankets to bring comfort to children with extended stays at local hospitals through Project Linus. We are happy and proud to be able to support our local and global community through service to others. Our current members and new inductees have demonstrated exemplary leadership through their service, scholarship, and character!

This year, due to the current pandemic we are facing, our chapter held its banquet virtually via WebEx, on April 29, 2020. All members were able to attend and participate in order to be formally inducted into the National Honor Society. While this platform is not ideal, the banquet ran smoothly and had its advantages. Parents and students did not have to venture out and drive to the school in rainy weather. They were able to attend the meeting from a comfortable chair or sofa in their own home. Nobody had to wait in a long line in the cafeteria to get food. Parents of students in attendance got a small glimpse of what online learning can be like with the assets and challenges it poses for both their child and educators.
