Monticello Man Dies in Fatal Farm Accident
October 15, 2020
At approximately 1:56 p.m., on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, the Green County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting that an individual was trapped under the head of a combine in a farm field located along Little Sugar Lane, in Washington Township, west of the Village of Monticello. The Monticello Fire Department, Green County EMS, Monticello Police, MedFlight and Green County Deputies responded to the scene.
The initial investigation indicated that John P. Marty, 62, rural Monticello, had been using a combine to pick soybeans at that location. It appears that the combine sustained mechanical problems and Marty was pinned under the head of the equipment while attempting repairs. Marty was freed from the equipment and lifesaving measures were attempted by First Responders at the scene.
Following additional investigation of the accident, it appears that Marty was laying in front of one of the tires of the combine working on the head of the equipment when it rolled forward, pinning him under the tire. Upon his arrival at the scene, a Monticello Firefighter was able to back the combine off of the victim but, as has been previously indicated, lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.
The Green County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene after MedFlight personnel pronounced Marty deceased.
