Belleville Girls Basketball Gets First Conference Win at Cambridge and Falls at Dodgeville
January 14, 2021
On Monday, January 4th, the Wildcats traveled to Dodgeville to take on the Dodgers. When they arrived, they found a team that was rounding into top performance after their season started late. With that being said, the Wildcats came out strong and took the lead early but after a few minutes in Dodgeville began gaining steam. Coach Pharo stated that unfortunately his team had some assignment issues, which saw Dodgeville take a 40-25 halftime lead. After some adjustments at halftime, the second half saw the teams playing a virtually even game but unfortunately the first half mistakes did the Wildcats in and saw them lose the game with a final score of 65-47.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by Alyssa Caskey with 13 points and Ava Foley with 12.
Then on Friday, January 8th, Belleville traveled to Cambridge to take on the Blue Jays. The first half was a filling out process by both teams, which saw Cambridge go into the locker room with a 24-22 lead at the half. Again, the Wildcats needed some halftime adjustments and again the game saw a tight second half until Cambridge took a 9-point lead with around 9 minutes to go, which led to a Wildcat timeout. Coach Pharo made a defensive change, and the team came out with a new energy. This new energy led to them eventually erasing their deficit and taking the lead and down the stretch; they salted the game away with free throws for a final 61-57 Wildcat victory.
They were led in scoring by Mickey Stampfl's 20 points, Ava Foley's 12 points, and Alyssa Caskey's 13 points that went along with her 16 rebounds for the Wildcats.
Belleville will continue their conference action this week on Friday, January 15th, against Waterloo.
