Monticello Boys Win Over Albany

The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team played at Albany on January 19th. Leading 41-10 at the half, the Ponies kept their lead throughout the second half to win the game. The final score was Monticello 73, Albany 31.
The Comets began the game with a 3-0 lead but the Ponies scored 25 out of the next 27 points to take a 20-point lead with less than 8 minutes to play in the first half. Monticello then outscored Albany 16-5 to finish the half with a 31-point lead. With just over 9 minutes left in the game, Monticello was ahead 61-26 and both teams made substitutions, with the Ponies outscoring the Comets for the remainder of the game.
Peter Gustafson led Monticello with 31 points and 2 assists, while Blake Klitzke scored 12 points and had 4 assists, and Rudy Wicker scored 11 points with 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Owen Ace pulled down 5 rebounds while Tristin Flanagan had 4 rebounds.
On January 22nd, the Ponies played at Black Hawk. Leading by 10 at the half, the Ponies held on and won the game. The final score was Monticello 48, Black Hawk 40.
For the first 3:22 of the game, the game was scoreless until a Black Hawk player made two free throws and Black Hawk had its only lead of the game. The Ponies went on a 9-0 run to take the lead and the closest the Warriors could get was 3 points for the rest of the game.
With 22 points and 6 rebounds, Peter Gustafson was the high scorer for the Ponies. Rudy Wicker scored 13 points with 8 rebounds and Lucas Heiser and Blake Klitzke each scored 4 points. Klitzke and Tristin Flanagan both had 4 rebounds.
Monticello is scheduled to play at Dodgeville on January 26th, at Pecatonica on January 28th and returns home on February 2nd to face Argyle.
