Dreams Become Real as New Public Library Opens in Belleville

April 1, 2021

Dreams, ideas, inspiration, and knowledge can all come to people from books; but what happens when people dream about a bigger, better and more beautiful place to find books or other information?

In the Village of Belleville, one such dream became a reality. After years of hard work from village residents, volunteers groups, library and government staff, the new Belleville Public Library officially began its phased opening on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

"Constructing this new Library has been a bright spot for many during the COVID pandemic," remarks Library Director Bronna Lehmann. The socially-distanced groundbreaking ceremony was held in April of 2020 – just weeks after the global pandemic shut many operations down.

"We look forward to welcoming the community into the next chapter of Belleville's 140-year history of library use," Lehmann said.

Library staff are coordinating a phased opening with capacity limits initially. Fortunately, some of the library's new technology will help; Library visitors are asked to check the monitor in the front lobby to be certain there is adequate space available inside for proper social distancing.

A maximum of ten people may be in the library's hallway and central circulation desk reception to pick up holds. From this vantage point, visitors can see most of the library's expanse.

Everyone is dreaming of a healthier tomorrow, so library staff will wear face coverings over their mouth and nose; they ask that you do the same. Hand sanitizer will be available. Staff will also continue to offer curbside pick-up for those who cannot wear a face covering.
