Belleville Fire Department Thanks EMS Services

May 20, 2021

May 16 through May 22, 2021, marks Emergency Medical Services Week in the United States. The Belleville Fire Department would like to recognize our partners Belleville Emergency Medical Service and all Wisconsin EMS systems.

Emergency Medical Services, while not officially recognized as such, are an essential service in the State of Wisconsin. Every hour of every day, EMS providers respond to 911 calls. Belleville EMS responds to over 350 calls annually, more than twice the number of calls the fire department responds to.

Emergency Medical Technicians have 180 hours of training, Advanced EMTs have an additional 170 hours of training and Paramedics receive over 1,200 hours of initial training. EMS providers must continue their education, with up to 48 hours of continuing education every two years. Many EMS providers then also attend vehicle operations courses, incident command classes and much other training. In the past year, Belleville EMS has made great strides to improve their level of care, beginning the transition from an EMT Basic level of care to an Advanced EMT level of care.

The majority of EMS providers in our state and communities are volunteers. They have regular full-time jobs, which they work in addition to the above training and their responsibilities to family. When you call an ambulance, your friend or neighbor may be the person who arrives to help you or a loved one in their time of need.

In Wisconsin the majority of EMS systems are their own department, and are not a part of the fire department. As a stand-alone service, EMS is often over shadowed by fire and police departments, who command the lion’s share of funding. Please take time to let your elected officials know you support adequate funding for EMS.

The Belleville Fire Department continues to be humbled by the generosity of our community. We would like to ask you all to consider sharing that generosity with our EMS partners as they seek to raise funds to continue their mission to better serve the community. If you are interested in volunteering, call Belleville EMS at (608) 424-3350.

On behalf of the officers and fire fighters of the Belleville Fire Department, thank you Belleville EMS and all EMS providers.
