World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 3, 2021

Tuesday, June 15, 2021, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. On and around this day, communities in the USA and all over the world will sponsor events to highlight solutions to this systemic social challenge. The Green County Elder Abuse Prevention (EAP) I-Team proudly sponsors a coloring page contest for local 5th, 6th, and/or 7th graders in the county to participate in this national conversation, as well as a T-shirt design contest through the Monroe High School. Our Green County I-Team also puts together a banner and pinwheel display outside of the Behring Senior Center from mid-May through June 15th, to bring awareness to the community regarding elder abuse. This year we are also hosting a booth at the Monroe Farmer’s Market on Saturday, June 12th, with activities, prizes, and information.

Green County had 223 total cases of reported elder abuse or neglect in 2020. That is one case reported every 1.6 days, or just over 3% of persons 65+ in Green County, who experienced some form of abuse or neglect in 2020 alone. As Americans, we believe in justice for all. Yet we fail to live up to this promise when we allow older members of our community to be abused or neglected. Older people are vital, contributing members of our society and their maltreatment diminishes us all. Just as we have confronted and addressed the social issues of child abuse and domestic violence, we can find solutions to address elder abuse. The power to prevent elder abuse is in your hands.

We can and must create healthier and safer living environments for older adults, including their homes, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
