Modeling Excellence in Education – Belleville Principal Heather Schmitz Selected as 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader

April 14, 2022

Belleville's High School and Middle School Principal Heather Schmitz has been named a 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader.

Famed American Basketball coach John Wooden is known for his words: "Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating." He spoke the truth! We look to our leaders to show excellence and that is just what is happening in Belleville, Wisconsin.

Belleville's High School and Middle School Principal Heather Schmitz has just been named a 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader. She was nominated by Belleville student Alexis Lamboley, who recognized her strong work as a principal. Recipients of this award are selected for "setting high standards for instruction, achievement and character, and creating a climate to best serve students, families, staff, and community." Schmitz has done just that and will receive a $6,000 matching grant for the Belleville Middle and High School she directs. Schmitz is one of 17 principals throughout the state of Wisconsin to receive this prestigious award, and the School District of Belleville is proud to have her as one of its top administrators.

District Administrator Nate Perry is not surprised to see Principal Schmitz selected for this honor. "Having worked closely with Heather for three years, she truly is the ultimate professional. She is always 'on' and is never satisfied with 'good enough.' Her combination of intelligence, experience, work ethic, and caring for students make her a very special educator. Many of the gains made at the middle and high schools can at least, in part, be attributed to her leadership."

The Kohl Foundation award program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman. Since 1990, the foundation has awarded more than $28.3 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students, and schools. "Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation," Kohl said. "I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future."

Wooden's sentiments are important in understanding the impact a good role model makes and the influence that person carries within one's own community if we are to fully respect the weight an award like the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader award holds. We all need that "cheerleader" to inspire us, but when that same "cheerleader" is setting the bar for distinction in her own area of excellence, it pushes and inspires the rest of the team to want to do better – to want to excel and sink that 3-pointer and win the game! Mrs. Schmitz exemplifies what it means to be a strong role model within the educational community she leads and she does her work with grace, commitment, inner strength, and modesty. It is not just the students who are able to find the support to shine under her leadership, but also the staff of the Belleville Middle and High School.

Receiving the 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader award is metaphorical for the work Schmitz does because it extends far beyond a prize honoring just one person – it carries with it the financial support to continue to do great things for the Belleville learning community Principal Schmitz seeks to push toward excellence. She truly is a proper role model in Coach Wooden's image, and her work is the most powerful form of education because it spans far beyond what one person can do – it engages the whole team!
