Lions Collect Over 500 Pounds of Plastic Bags So Far

May 5, 2022

The New Glarus Lions Club has exceeded their goal for the NexTrex program. "I'm pleased to report that the NG Lions met and exceeded our goal of 500 pounds of plastic bags for recycling!" said President Carol Hassemer. "We turned in our first bags on March 21st and hit 504 pounds on Earth Day 2022 (April 22nd)!!! That's amazing in four weeks and three days."

The Lions would like to send a huge shout-out to area residents including Lions, area businesses, the school district, the Village, and the five stores who are accepting the bags. And kudos to the Lions volunteers who are picking up and delivering the bags as well. The Lions have a new co-sponsor as their 6-month commitment doesn't end until August 31st.

"Thank you to the New Glarus Chamber of Commerce, who has signed up to be a new community program participant," said Hassemer.

The Lions Club is currently working with the Village of New Glarus to determine placement of the park bench, as well as future benches. You can recycle your plastic bags, plastic bubble wraps, newspaper bags, plastic mailers, cereal box bags, plastic wraps for water bottles/toilet paper/paper towels and water softener bags at Piggly Wiggly in Belleville, Gempeler's Supermarket in Monticello and at Cenex, the Village Hall and Roy's Market in New Glarus. Put your clean and empty plastic bags/wraps in a plastic bag (NO bottles, plastic rings around soda bottles, frozen food bags, soil/mulch bags, pet food bags) in the special recycle containers, and the Lions will do the rest.

This recycling initiative supports the Lions' Environmental global cause. The clubs are working through the Trex Corporation's NexTrex program from which the plastic is converted into decking and park furniture.
