National Leadership Needed to Get on Top of CWD

Dear Editor,
I live near Spring Green, in the heart of our state that Chronic Wasting Disease has hit so hard. CWD did not start in our state. Because it travels easily, it is a threat to deer herds not only in Wisconsin but many other states, as well. That is why we need national leadership and a national plan to get on top of this disease that threatens the health of our deer and prevents so many of us from enjoying the annual hunt and the year-long venison.

Janet Tyler Johnson died October 11, 2020, after a two year battle with Ovarian Cancer. She was born on June 1, 1955, in Joliet, IL, the daughter of David and Lois Tyler.
She and her husband, Randy, built and lived in a log house in Blanchardville, but decided to move to New Mexico where they lived for the past six years. She was self-employed as a Certified Financial Planner.
She is survived by her loving husband; parents; sister, Kathy; brother, Bruce (Carol); sister-in-law, Julie; niece, Rachel; step-children, Stephan, Stasia and Kristen.

Annette Ruef, age 78 was reunited in eternal life with her beloved husband, Willy, on Sunday, October 18, 2020. She was born on February 22, 1942, in McHenry, IL, the daughter of Alvan Rothermel and Ruth Michels.

<strong>Pfc. Jacob Durst Receives Discharge</strong>
Pfc. Jakob Durst, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Durst, has received his discharge from the U.S. Army after 47 months of service, of which he was over-sea 36 months. He has 94 points to his credit.
Jacob entered service in December 1941, and received training at Camp Barkley, Texas, and Ft. Benning, Ga. He left for Europe in October 1942, and served in England, Africa, Italy and France as a member of the 21st General Hospital unit. He has three battle stars to his credit.

Lady Ponies Win Over Juda Lose to Argyle

Correction: On September 29th, the Lady Ponies volleyball team hosted Barneveld and won in three, 25-19; 25-19; 25-13.
Alexa Siegenthaler had 2 aces and 22 assists while Ellie Gustafson had 16 digs and 21 kills. Macey Freitag had 9 kills, Jaden Zuber had 8 kills, and Delenn Gillaspie had 17 assists.
The Lady Ponies hosted Albany on October 5th. Monticello won it in three, 25-13; 25-12; 25-9.
Macey Grant had 7 digs and 4 aces, while Ellie Gustafson had 11 kills, Hannah Clark had 3 blocks, Katelyn Eyler had 4 aces and Delenn Gillaspie had 13 assists.

New Glarus School District Moving to All-Virtual Instruction for Two Weeks

The New Glarus School District moved to all-virtual instruction for two weeks due to COVID-19. The district closely watches both internal and external metrics in order to make these decisions. The external metrics have been concerning for weeks, with the county being in “Red” on the Harvard Global Health Institute pandemic map and “Very High” for activity level according to the State Department of Health. This weekend, the internal metrics of positive cases and quarantines escalated significantly, and were connected to every building in the district.

State Bank of Cross Plains Donates to School District of Belleville

At the school board meeting on Monday, October 12, 2020, the State Bank of Cross Plains made a donation of $9000.00 to the School District of Belleville. Steve Eager, the bank's Marketing Manager, presented the check to Athletics and Activities Director Wayne Fell. The donation will be used to purchase new scoreboards for the baseball and softball fields. The State Bank of Cross Plains has donated just under $40,000 in the last five years to update nearly every scoreboard in the district. The district appreciates this generosity and partnership!

Boy Scout Troop 106 Wreath Sale

Boy Scout Troop 106 is selling evergreen wreaths again this year. Several varieties of wreaths are available, including Cedar and Balsam. This fundraiser helps Scouts pay for summer camp and other activities. Orders need to be placed by October 30th for delivery just before Thanksgiving. The New Glarus Village Hall is open 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for in-person absentee voting only.

41st Annual Native American Indian Artifact Show

The Badger State Archaeological Society will hold its 41st Annual Indian Artifact Show on Saturday, October 17th. The event will be held at the Junction House, N3693 County Road J, three miles northwest of Monroe, WI, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Due to COVID, this is a new place and date.
There is no admission, but donations are appreciated with funds going to Wisconsin & Illinois Archaeological societies.
