On June 16th of 2014, a tornado swept through the UW-Platteville campus and edge of town. The swirling winds twisted, broke and uprooted hundreds of trees as it combed a four-mile part into the land. As our team bus drives down the hill into Memorial Park, we see the destruction along the wall of woods surrounding the bowl-like park. Dozens of trees with limbs still hanging from their neighbors or piled together like Pick-Up-Sticks make us think “what a mess!” We jump off the bus, look down the course and notice something strange; sunlight hits our faces!

Now more than ever before, people with diabetes are living happier, healthier lives. Monroe Clinic invites those who have diabetes, are at risk for diabetes or care for someone with diabetes to an evening of discussion and learning. Join diabetes experts on Tuesday, October 13, in Monroe Clinic, Founder’s Hall, 515 22nd Avenue, Monroe, for vendor booths from 4:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m., meal preparation demonstration at 5:00 p.m., Paul Bekx, MD, presentation on New Therapy for Diabetes at 5:45 p.m., and a panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., with a questions and answers from attendees.

On Sunday, October 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will be the annual celebration of Harvest Fest at the Swiss Historical Village Museum. There will be special discounted admission rates to the museum for Harvest Fest. The New Glarus Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring free horse drawn wagon rides from downtown to the museum.
Everyone is invited to tour and explore the 14 buildings and grounds, as well as chat with guides about the history of New Glarus.

The New Glarus School Board is moving forward in considering a possible no-tax-impact referendum to deal with maintenance needs, safety/security, and space issues. Throughout the past year, the School Board and Administration has been working on a long-term facilities plan. Replacing roofs, updating the HVAC system, improvements to safety/security, and creating additional space has risen to the top of the list of priorities.
