Sugar River Euchre

Monte’s was handed their third defeat of the half while J&M Bar realized their second win of the season. The River-Rats took an early lead and ended the evening 22 points ahead of the Mounties. During this same time, a battle between the two first place teams was taking place in New Glarus. Shenanigan’s started out with a perfect round to take a 28-point lead over Kleeman’s. After four rounds, the Hay-Shakers found themselves down another 10.

Knights in First Place in Capitol South Conference

On Tuesday, January 24, the New Glarus Knights played at Pecatonica, winning a thrilling game against the home team. The final score was New Glarus 79, Pecatonica 73, despite the Knights trailing by four at halftime.
Cullen Brooks poured in 32 points for the Knights. Jaden Kreklow put 25 on the board and Trevor Gassman scored 8 points.
New Glarus hosted Marshall on January 26th. After a rocky start, New Glarus led at halftime, 44-40. The Knights kept the pace for the second half and won the game. The final score was New Glarus 94, Marshall 86.

Lady Knights Lose to Marshall

The New Glarus Lady Knights played at Marshall on January 27th. Marshall held a 15-point lead at the half. New Glarus ended up losing the game, and the final score was Marshall 70, New Glarus 47.
Willow Lee led New Glarus with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Lexi Krause and Julia Barnaby each scored 10 points and McKinley Righter put 9 points on the board.
The Knights have an overall record of 7-9 and hosted Waterloo on January 30th. They will play at Waterloo on February 2nd.

Beutler Joins Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Former New Glarus graduate Ashley Beutler joined the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January.  Ashley won four individual Conference Championships, four individual Section Championships and three individual State Championships.  Ashley earned First Team All State awards all four years, and WCCCA Runner of the Year, Gatorade Wisconsin Runner of the Year and Wisconsin State Journal’s Runner of the Year her senior year. 
Ashley competed for UW-Madison in cross country and track for five years following graduation from New Glarus High School.

Ponies Lose Heartbreaker to Benton

After taking an early lead in the game against Benton on January 23rd, the Monticello Ponies boys basketball team were down by 18 points at halftime. In the second half, the Ponies went on a 14-0 run to bring the score within 2 with five minutes left. Benton answered back with 11 points and Monticello fought back to get within 2 with 13 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, Benton made 3-3 from the free throw line with 11 seconds left and won the game. The final score was Benton 55, Monticello 50.

Students Hold STAR Event

Haiden Zimmerman and Nikki Bushee recently led a STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) event through Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). They held Sock Hops for the middle and elementary schools of New Glarus to raise money and collect sock donations for children in the district that cannot afford it. Along with the sock hops, they also held a sock drive in the middle school and through FCCLA. The overall goal was to get 100 pairs of socks, to their surprise they received over 1,000 pairs of socks. They would like to thank everyone who donated.

New Glarus High School Mock Trial Team Hosts Annual Scrimmage

On Wednesday, January 25th, the New Glarus High School Mock Trial Team hosted its annual scrimmage. This year, the Mock Trial team has two teams and there are over 20 students on the team.  The team is coached by Dan Gartzke, Faun Phillipson and Lexa Speth.  Best of luck to the New Glarus High School Mock Trial Team!

Fredrickson and Sawyer Receive All State Academic Awards

Senior Kyle Fredrickson and Freshman Gabbie Sawyer (missing from photo) received All-State Academic Awards in January by qualifying for the WIAA Cross Country State Meet and earning a high grade point average.  Kyle and Gabbie both have a GPA of 4.0.

New Glarus Child Development Days

The New Glarus School District’s 19th Annual Child Development Days and 4-Year-Old Kindergarten screening will be held this year on <strong>Friday, February 3rd, and Saturday, February 4th, 2017, at the New Glarus Elementary School, 1420 2nd Street, New Glarus.</strong>
The Child Development Days opportunity is open to all children who reside in the New Glarus School District between the ages of 6 months and 4 years.
