Avalanche Scores Two Big Wins

On January 31st, the Monroe Co-op Avalanche hockey team traveled to Beloit to face Beloit Memorial.
The home team dominated the scoreboard in the first period and by early in the second, the Avalanche were down 6-0. Tyler Johnson, assisted by Seth Lindsay and Travis Edmunds got Monroe on the board, but Beloit wouldn’t let up and ended up winning the game, 8-1.
Heath Bear had 28 saves and Daniel Guilliams had 15 saves.
The Avalanche hosted La Follette on Thursday night. They crushed the Eastside Lakers, 4-1.

Ponies Can't Hold On Against Benton

Early on in the game against Pecatonica on January 31st, the Ponies held a 2-point lead, but Pec went on a 24-6 run, followed by another run of 16-5 to finish the half. The Ponies trailed by 26 at the half.
The Ponies never got closer than 26 points in the second half, and were outscored 27-22 by the Vikings.

Knights Clobber Waterloo

The New Glarus Knights boys basketball team hosted Waterloo on January 31st. Taking a commanding 14-point lead to end the half, the Knights dominated in the second and won the game, 69-31.
Leading the Knights in scoring was Cullen Brooks, with 19 points. Jaden Kreklow put 18 points on the board and Zach Feller scored 12 points.
The team played at Cambridge on Friday night. Cambridge held a 1-point lead at the half, but the Knights fought back and outscored them in the second half. The final score was New Glarus 72, Cambridge 64.

Reminder Regarding Village of New Glarus Snow Removal

To make public sidewalks safe for pedestrians, the owner or occupant of any property which fronts upon or abuts any public sidewalk or hydrant is responsible for the removal of any snow and/or ice that accumulates on the sidewalk or hydrant. Pursuant to Section 262-7 of the Municipal Code of the Village of New Glarus, residents are required to clear snow and/or ice within twenty-four (24) hours from the time the snow ceases to accumulate.  Sidewalks are to be kept clear of snow and ice to a minimum of four (4) feet in width.

Francis Beers Scholarship Donation

Francis Beers has generously donated $1,000 to the Stuessy-Kuenzi New Glarus Post #141 to support the annual scholarship to a graduating New Glarus High School student. His donation will add to the existing Walter Ott Scholarship, to be renamed the Walter Ott/Francis Beers Scholarship.

Thurow Named Candidate in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Maria Thurow, a graduating senior at New Glarus High School, has been named as one of more than 4,000 candidates in the 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.5 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2017.

New Glarus Music Boosters Annual Spaghetti Supper

The New Glarus Music Boosters Annual Spaghetti Supper will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the New Glarus Hotel, serving from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the New Glarus music students.
The menu includes All You Can Eat Spaghetti, Garlic Bread and Salad, all generously donated by the New Glarus Hotel, along with Drinks with milk generously donated by the New Glarus Dairy, and of course, Dessert!
The price of an adult (11 and older) ticket is $8.00, children 4-10, $5.00 and children under four eat free.

Blackhawk Technical College Students Provide Public With Free Tax Preparation Service

Blackhawk Technical College’s award winning income tax assistance program is preparing for its 23rd year of service and is taking reservations for tax filers who qualify to use the free, fast and confidential tax preparation service.
Students in BTC’s Accounting and Administrative Professional programs once again are ready to serve the community by assisting low income and elderly with their 2015 tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that is aimed at those whose taxable income is below $53,000.

Monticello Village Board Moving Forward With Background Checks and Interviews for New Police Chief

The Monticello Village Board met on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. The boardroom again was nearly standing room only, with the majority of visitors there to learn if the board would come to a decision about a new police chief. The agenda listed a notice for a closed session for “Considering employment for Police Chief position.”
