January Meeting of the Monticello Area Historical Society

The Monticello Area Historical Society (MAHS) will meet at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 23, 2020, in the Zwingli UCC Lounge, 416 E. Lake Avenue, Monticello.
Following a short business meeting, Jim and Janet McNeill, along with Lucille Elmer and John Kummer, will give a talk on the Monticello Sales Barn.
The MAHS and the McNeills encourage any former workers, buyers or sellers of livestock at the Monticello Sales Barn to attend and share stories, pictures and artifacts.

Monticello High School Homecoming Court

The Monticello High School Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2020, in the Rehmstedt Gym. The dance will run from 7:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m., with the Grand March at 7:30 p.m. The theme for homecoming is ^Around the World.^" Admission is $1 spectators; $5 single or $8 couple."

Dates: Thursday, February 13th, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Friday, February 14th, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Place: Monticello Elementary School in the 4K Classroom

Monticello PTO Euchre Tournament

The Monticello PTO is holding their 5th Annual Euchre Tournament on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at T&D’s Bar Grill in Monticello. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the tournament starting at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a small silent auction with items from our generous donors.

<strong>Tessa Sheridan</strong>, New Glarus, was named to the Fall 2019 Dean’s List at Berry College. The Dean’s List honors students who posted an academic average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale while carrying a class load of at least 12 hours during the semester.

Nellie J. Babler, age 91, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison. She was born on August 26, 1928, in Monticello, the daughter of Johannes and Leonia (Staley) Wirth.

U.S. News and World Report Names New Glarus Home a 2019-20 Best Nursing Home

New Glarus Home is among the 19% of U.S. skilled nursing facilities that have been recognized as a Best Nursing Home for 2019-20 by U.S. News & World Report.
The home earned Best Nursing Homes status by achieving a rating of “High Performing,” the highest possible rating, for both Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those homes that satisfy U.S. News’s assessment of the appropriate use of key services and consistent performance in quality measures.

4-H Club Makes and Donates Blankets

The Dayton Dairylanders 4-H club made a total of 16 tie blankets to donate to various places. They were delivered to the Green County Humane Society, St Mary's Care Center, Monroe Pleasant View Nursing Home, UW Cancer Carbone Center and Project Linus.

Sugar River Euchre

The New Year brought a new team and new bar owners into the Sugar River Euchre League family. Riley Tavern’s new owners, Chuck and Kate Teasdale (welcome), played host to the Riley Shufflers and the league’s new team, the Tyrol Trolls. The Riley Shufflers quickly took on the role of teacher/destroyer. Ed Chancellor and Dave Herfel played the headmaster role by contributing 114 points to the Shufflers’ 79-point win.

Cheesemakers Continue Winning

The Monroe Cheesemakers co-op hockey team played against Milton at the Mandt Hockey Arena in Stoughton on January 3rd. Tied at 2 by the end of the first, the Cheesemakers scored 3 goals in the third to win it. The final score was Monroe 5, Milton 2.
Goals in the first period were scored by Hayden Roth assisted by Roman Bauer and Blaze Janecke and Payton Stauffacher on a power play assisted by Roth and Janecke.
