Monticello Lions Club Awards Scholarships

Lions President Mike Klassy, presenting a $500 check to our scholarship recipients. Alexis Graber is attending Blackhawk Technical College to become a Dental Assistant, and later to become a Dental Hygienist. Claire Klossner is attending Viterbo College, La Crosse, majoring in Nursing with a minor in Spanish. Mallory Bartels is attending UW-Whitewater, majoring in Special Education and Early Childhood Education with a minor in Spanish. Hannah Zanow is attending UW-Whitewater majoring in Marketing and a minor in Spanish.

New Glarus Lions Club Awards Scholarships

2020 scholarships funds were presented on Monday, January 6, 2020, at the New Glarus Lions Club meeting. From left: Reeve Binger, son of James and Patricia Binger, is attending MATC, Anika Beutler, daughter of Gary and Angela Beutler, is attending Edgewood College, Jared Martinson, son of Jon and Aleta Martinson, is attending Clark University, and Lion Jerry Blum, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
Haiden Zimmerman, daughter of Rod and Deb Zimmerman, is attending Carroll College and was unable to attend.

Opie Taylor’s Harley Blue Express steamed right past the Norsk Cowboys’ corral to defeat the Cowboys by 25 points in Blue Mounds. With 118 tickets punched by Tracy Haag and Dale Herfel, they took over as head conductors on the Express to finish tied for this week’s top scorers. In doing so, the Express gave the Cowboys their first loss of the 2019/2020 season.

Hockey Team Suffers Tough Loss to McFarland

The Monroe co-op hockey team, which includes several players from New Glarus, hosted Monona Grove on January 7th. The home team took the lead early on and won, 5-2.
Blaze Janecke put Monroe on the scoreboard first just under 3 minutes into the game, with an assist from Hayden Roth and Payton Stauffacher. Ryan Molitor put one in the back of the net about 9 minutes later.

Lady Knights Drop Two Games

On January 6th, the New Glarus Lady Knights basketball team played at Mineral Point. Down at the half by 10, New Glarus stepped it up on offense in the second half but couldn’t hold on for a win. The final score was Mineral Point 68, New Glarus 60.
“Knights struggled to keep Mineral Point’s guards from getting into the paint,” commented Coach Kim Burton.

Wildcats Ground Phoenix

The Belleville Wildcats hosted Watertown Luther Prep on Friday, January 10th. The Wildcats were trailing by 3 at the half but had a big second half, holding Luther Prep to just 11 points, and won the game. The final score was Belleville 45, Luther Prep 30.
Leading Belleville with 11 points was Trevor Syse, while Carson Syse scored 10 points and Brody Duerst and Sawyer Fahey both put 8 on the board.
The Wildcats now have a 6-2 record and will host Marshall on January 16th, play at New Glarus on January 21st and host Cambridge on January 24th.

Lady Wildcats Split Week

The Wildcats hosted the Parkview Vikings on Tuesday, January 7th. The first half of the game was very tight between the two teams, partly because Belleville was trying to implement a new defense and very timely shooting by Parkview. At halftime, Coach Pharo decided to go back to one of their base defenses that they had been running all year and it seemed to energize the team in the second half. In the second half of the game Belleville was able to outscore the Vikings 40 to 26 to take home a 61-45 victory.

Lady Ponies Score Big Win Over Panthers

Monticello’s Lady Ponies basketball team hosted Belleville on January 3rd. Down 11-30 at the half, the girls stepped it up offensively in the second half but couldn’t overcome the first half deficit. They lost to the Lady Wildcats, 39-59. Miah Brokopp led the team with 14 points while Harley Disch scored 10 points and Mackie Errthum put 6 points on the board.

Free Throw Championship to be Held

The Knights of Columbus Council 6630 is holding a Free Throw Championship on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., at the New Glarus High School gymnasium. The event is open to area boys and girls ages 9-14 as of January 1st.
This is a free event. Winners from the divisions advance to District Finals in Stoughton on Sunday, February 16th, and potentially to Regional Finals in Sauk City on Saturday, March 14th.

Former New Glarus Football Coach Passes Away

We have received word that John Franz, of Bassett, WI, formerly of New Glarus, passed away on January 3, 2020. He was 83 years old.
Franz was an Industrial Arts Teacher at New Glarus High School and also served as the football coach from 1968-69, leading the team to the 1969 State Line League Championship. Known for his innovative coaching style, he will be fondly remembered by his players and students.
