Dear Editor,
Will the miseries ever end? A pandemic killing 200,000 of our fellow citizens, wildfires, hurricanes, and a presidency of deceit, hypocrisy and crass disregard for voters. Grieving includes the loss of John Lewis and now Ruth Bader Ginsburg, another hero fighting for equal rights. If ever there is a time to vote, it’s now.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kubly on Saturday received a telegram from their son, Sgt. Delmar Kubly, stationed in Colorado, that he and Miss Marion Hoesly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Hoesly, Monticello, expected to be married Sunday evening. We hope to have further particulars later.
T/Sgt. Harold Berge is home after serving in the Army for several years. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Berge.

PSC Votes to Extend the COVID-19 Utility Disconnection Moratorium to November 1

On Thursday, September 17th, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) voted 2-1 to continue to stay a portion of its June 26 order, extending the moratorium on utility residential customer disconnections and refusal of service for nonpayment until November 1. Prior to the extension, regulated utilities were not allowed to disconnect service for non-payment until October 1. The move comes as COVID-19 positive cases continue to spike in the state.

PHYLLIS J. HABECK

Phyllis J. Habeck, born January 16, 1933, passed away recently.
Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, she grew up there and in Wausau, Wisconsin, where she graduated from high school. While attending UW-Stevens Point, she met Roy Habeck, who she married on August 29, 1953.

EUNICE M. GRUNNET

Eunice M. (Keehn) Grunnet, age 92, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2020, at her home. She was born at home in the Town of Brooklyn to Theodore and Irene (Smith) Keehn on April 23, 1928.
Eunice graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1946. On September 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Jerome Grunnet at the Oregon Lutheran Church. Eunice and Jerome farmed together for many years. She was a member of the Brooklyn Lutheran Church, Happy Go Lucky Homemakers, and the Gill School Mother's Club.

Lady Ponies Win Over Lady Vikings

The Monticello Ponies volleyball team hosted their first match of the season on Tuesday, September 15th, against Pecatonica. The Ponies won in four, 25-21; 25-8; 25-16; 26-24. Ellie Gustafson had 16 kills, 5 aces and 14 digs, while Hannah Clark had 12 kills and 3 blocks and Alexa Siegenthaler had 26 assists. Mackie Errthum had 4 blocks.

On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declared a new public health emergency in Wisconsin due to recent surge in cases among young people, and also issued a new face coverings order effective immediately.

Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Ginsburg

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation directing that flags at the White House and all public buildings and grounds and military facilities be flown at half-staff until the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is interred. Ginsburg passed away on Friday, September 17, 2020, at 87 years old due to metastatic pancreatic cancer. Ginsburg served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1993 until her death on September 17, 2020.

DATCP Announces Recipients of Food Security Initiative Grants

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has announced the recipients of funding through the Food Security Initiative. A total of 17 food banks and other non-profit organizations that serve people and Tribal Nations across Wisconsin will receive a total of approximately $5 million through the COVID-19 Food Security Network Support Grant. This funding aims to help them adapt to the infrastructure challenges they’ve faced as a result of COVID-19.
