Avalanche Loses to McFarland

Monroe’s lone goal against McFarland was scored by Cade Martin in the third period.
“We played well the first half of the first period, but we were skating out of position too much and we got tired too quickly. It hurt missing Tyler Johnson and Evan Byrnes, and it showed. We started playing much better the second and third periods. Now we have a long weekend for everyone to rest up and heal,” commented Coach Josh Smith.
The final score was McFarland 9, Monroe 1.

It is time to start thinking about summer softball. Before young athletes hit the softball diamonds this summer, leagues need to get organized and formed. This is where the Verona Area Girls Softball Association (VAGSA) has helped out with a variety of programs for more than 12 years.

PeeWee A Claims Championship

The Avalanche PeeWee A team participated in the Waupun Warrior PeeWee A eight team tourney January 29-31. In the first game, the Avalanche faced the Ozaukee Ice Dogs. The Avalanche dominated the entire game, shutting out the Ice Dogs 4-0. Four Avalanche players got on the scoreboard: Tessa Janecke, Alvin Buholzer with a drive all the way down the ice, Hayden Roth, and Blaze Janecke. Earning assists were Blaze Janecke and Hayden Roth. Goaltender Jack Leverton earned the shut out and recorded 28 saves.

New Glarus Girls Split the Week

The New Glarus girls basketball team traveled to Argyle on Tuesday, January 26th, to face the 1-6 Comets in a non-conference match up.
The Lady Knights were leading going into half-time, 31-13. The girls never gave their lead up and won the game with a score of New Glarus 58, Argyle 34.
Tamara Elzen led the Knights in scoring with 13 points, Vanessa Narveson had 10 points and Julia Barnaby contributed 9 points toward the win. McKinley Righter had eight rebounds and Julia Barnaby and Devon Boll each had four rebounds.

Ponies Break 34 Game Losing Streak

In a game that was postponed for one day due to weather, the Monticello boys basketball team broke their 34 game losing streak with a win over Madison Country Day at home on January 26th.
Madison led late in the first half, but the Ponies went on a 17-5 run to close out the half, in the lead by 10 points. The Ponies came out of the locker room on fire, and started the second half with a 25-7 run and continued to keep the lead for the rest of the game. The Ponies won, 73-37.

Water Media Painting Class to be Held at Monroe Arts Center

Registrations are currently being accepted for the art class series “Water Media Painting” to be taught by artist Deborah Meyer.  This six-week series, for all levels of students age 18 and over, is scheduled for Tuesdays, February 16 through March 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th Street, Monroe, Wisconsin.

Public School Open Enrollment Application Period Began Feb. 1

Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment application period, which allows parents an opportunity to send their children to any public school district in the state, runs from February 1 to April 29 for the 2016-17 school year.
Traditionally, children in Wisconsin are assigned to public school districts based on the location of their parents’ home. Open enrollment is a tuition-free opportunity for parents to apply for their children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live.

Primrose Youth Ready to Serve

Sunday, February 7, 2016, will be the 16th Annual Pancake Breakfast to support Primrose Youth with camp activities. Menu will include: “All you can eat” Pancakes and Fruit Toppings, Scrambled Eggs, Fresh Sausage Links, Colby & Muenster Cheese, Apple and Orange Juice, and Coffee.
Breakfast will begin immediately following worship from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, or until all are served. The cost is $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 4-9 and under 4 free.
