Silent Auction! Bowling!   Euchre Tournament!

On Sunday, May 6th, the Friends of the Belleville Public Library are holding a fundraiser at Sugar River Lanes for the new library and community center.  Bowling begins at noon; $5.00 buys a game and shoes and $8.00 for two games. The euchre tournament begins at 1:00 p.m.  The $10.00 entry fee includes a light lunch afterwards.  There will be raffles:  six gift baskets plus a 50/50 raffle with the drawings at 5:00 p.m.  All afternoon you can browse and bid on silent auction items.  Bids close at 6:30 p.m.

Bike Safety Rodeo

The Belleville Police Department is hosting a Bicycle Safety Rodeo at a <strong>new location this year</strong>, Sugar River Park, on Saturday, May 19, 2018, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. It is for children in grades 4K through 4th grade.  The event will be held rain or shine!
Activities will include safety courses to ride through, free professional bike inspections, proper helmet fit checks and, if the weather is good, a visit from the police horses.

Belleville Prom will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m., at the Belleville High School. Grand March begins at 9:00 p.m. Admission cost is $5.00 per student, and $5.00 per family.

Polka for the Swiss Great Success

Dear Editor,
The Swiss Center of North America is deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this year's Polka for the Swiss fundraising event Sunday, April 15th, a great success despite a spring snowfall limiting travel for some.
This is the third year that Mike and Roland of the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant have hosted Polka for the Swiss. With your assistance, and that of your incredible staff, we raised nearly $7,000 for the non-profit Swiss Center of North America. Mike and Roland understand what it is to be a community partner and I warmly thank you.

It is encouraging and rewarding to see enthusiastic visitors and members enjoy our new display – “Monticello of Yesteryear”. Robert W. Meier, age 80 of Monticello, died Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the New Glarus Home. Bob was born on July 13, 1937, in Janesville, the son of William G. and Bernice M. (Behnke) Meier.

June D. (Hefty) Kresge, age 89, passed away at the Stoughton Hospital on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. She was born on June 4, 1928, in West Allis, WI, to her parents, Henry and Edna Marie (Steussy) Hefty.

Donna J. Karlen, age 85 of Monticello, died Monday, April 30, 2018.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.

Bailey's Run Vineyard to Open in May

Green County will soon have a new vineyard/winery. Bailey's Run Vineyard is planning to open on May 18th, and a Grand Opening Celebration is planned for Memorial Day weekend, with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m. The vineyard/winery is located about a mile west of the Village of New Glarus on Klitzke Road, just off of STH 39.

<strong>Braceros Honored with Election to Phi Beta Kappa </strong>
Nineteen Cornell College students have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the country’s oldest and most respected academic honor society, including<strong> Alfred Eiji Braceros </strong>of Belleville. Phi Beta Kappa considers members of the top 15 percent of the senior class and the top five percent of the junior class. These students’ names will be added to the permanent plaque in Cole Library listing all members elected to Cornell’s Delta of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1922.
